Saudi Arabia to Issue Passport to Camels to Better Manage Prized Herds

The digital passport for over 2.2 million camels will record identity, health, and ownership data to improve market transparency and support strategic sector planning.

  • On Tuesday, Deputy Minister Mansour bin Hilal Al‑Mushaiti inaugurated Saudi Arabia's Camel Passport initiative to document ownership and boost market credibility, the ministry said.
  • The ministry says the move aims to unify regulatory and digital frameworks by documenting camel data, ownership, breeds and health to support veterinary response and oversight, while regulating sales and transport for market participants and traders.
  • The passport contains a microchip number and comprehensive animal records including name, birth date, breed, photos, and a certified vaccination table with attending veterinarians' details; the ministry said it will enhance pricing and transparency in local and international auctions.
  • The government says passports will be issued nationwide to the kingdom's camel population, supporting data from the June 2025 census of 2,235,297 heads for national livestock distribution and breeding improvement programs.
  • Organisers have in recent years stepped up enforcement against cosmetic alterations, as camel beauty contests attract heavy spending and illicit tactics from participants and enthusiasts.
