San Francisco Archdiocese agrees to pay $395 million to settle child sex abuse lawsuits
The deal covers about 530 survivors and adds a 14-point child-safety plan, including public disclosure of accused clergy and bans on secrecy agreements.
- On Monday, the San Francisco Archdiocese agreed to pay $395 million to settle more than 500 lawsuits alleging child sexual abuse by clergy and church employees, attorney Jeff Anderson announced.
- The agreement resolves claims filed after California temporarily lifted the statute of limitations for childhood sexual abuse lawsuits, following the Archdiocese's bankruptcy filing nearly three years ago.
- Besides the funds, the Archdiocese must implement 14 child protection and transparency reforms, including public disclosure of accused clergy, negotiated by a committee of survivors over thousands of hours.
- U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Dennis Montali must still approve the plan, while Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone will write apology letters to each survivor and plaintiffs may pursue claims against the Archdiocese's insurers.
- Margie O'Driscoll, who sued over abuse at Marin Catholic High School nearly 50 years ago, said the settlement "puts the responsibility on church officials, not survivors," following a record $880 million Los Angeles settlement.
