Shocking Image Shows Man Hidden Inside Vehicle’s Gas Tank in Attempted Smuggling, Officials Say
CBP officers found a Mexican national concealed in a gas tank compartment during a smuggling attempt; the individual was hospitalized with burn injuries, officials said.
- On Feb. 27, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested a 20-year-old man driving a 2005 GMC SUV at the San Ysidro Port of Entry for attempting to smuggle a Mexican national hidden in the vehicle's gas tank.
- A canine team alerted officers to the vehicle's undercarriage during initial inspection, prompting a secondary examination where they discovered a person concealed inside a "non-factory compartment" within the fuel tank.
- Emergency personnel transported the concealed individual to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Chula Vista for treatment of severe burn injuries sustained inside the gas tank during the smuggling attempt.
- The driver, whose name remains unreleased, was arrested and booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego following the incident.
- San Ysidro Port Director Mariza Marin said the case "underscores the dangerous and inhumane tactics employed by smugglers," adding that CBP remains committed to disrupting such operations.
