Samsung's 'Flex Titanium' Tipped to Make Foldable Phones Tougher
Samsung says the new display design uses a titanium-alloy foil and support plate to reduce creasing while preserving foldable durability.
- On Tuesday, Samsung confirmed in a press release that its next-generation Galaxy foldable devices will debut with new Flex Titanium display technology at the London Unpacked event on July 22.
- Addressing user feedback from seven years of foldable phones, Samsung engineers sought to minimize crease visibility without compromising strength or portability. Kyung-Jin Yoo, EVP and Head of Mobile Display Product Development Team at Samsung Display, said the design secures flexibility using micro-patterned holes.
- Positioned below the OLED panel, the new Flex Titanium structure employs a flexible, super-thin titanium-alloy film offering "20 times greater mechanical stiffness than plastic films" while measuring less than 30% the thickness of a human hair.
- Samsung will debut a trio of new foldable phones—the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Flip 8, and Galaxy Z Fold Wide—at the July 22 Galaxy Unpacked event in London. These devices are expected to feature the titanium display hardware.
- Industry rumors previously suggested Samsung had developed a "creaseless" solution for this year's foldable lineup. Android Authority will continue providing coverage leading up to the London Unpacked debut, where further details will be unveiled.
