Sainsbury’s to stop selling brown eggs in major net-zero push
The supermarket said white eggs have a 12.7% lower carbon footprint and may improve animal welfare as it works toward net zero goals.
Sainsbury is phasing out brown eggs from its own-brand ranges to switch exclusively to white shells, aiming to reach net zero emissions across its supply chain by 2050.
Studies found white-shell eggs have a 12.7% lower carbon footprint because white hens require less feed, live longer, and produce less manure than brown varieties.
Nutritionally, there is no difference between brown and white eggs, as Sainsbury maintains quality while collaborating with suppliers to improve animal welfare and food system resilience.
White hens are less prone to feather pecking, improving animal welfare outcomes compared with brown breeds that suffer higher rates of this behavioral issue.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, rival supermarkets including Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, Aldi, and Lidl tested white egg demand after panic buying caused brown egg shortages.
