Russia's Lavrov says the U.S. is smashing the world around with its raid on Venezuela and threats to Iran
Lavrov said the U.S. undermines international law and relations by seizing Venezuelan leader Maduro and threatening Iran, actions criticized by many Global South states.
- Jan 14 in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov condemned a U.S. operation in Venezuela as illegal, saying the United States was fragmenting the international system and `We are talking about a gross violation of international law`.
- On Jan 3, United States forces seized Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores in strikes on Caracas that disrupted power, then transported them to New York where they pleaded not guilty.
- Pointing to international reaction, Lavrov said his views were shared 'by the overwhelming majority of states in the global South and East,' criticizing Western Europeans and Washington allies for avoiding principled assessments.
- Despite U.S. pressure, Lavrov pledged continued cooperation with Tehran and Caracas, saying Russia and Iran will honour bilateral commitments and remain committed to agreements with Venezuela.
- U.S. officials say the operation was intended to counter drug trafficking and protect democracy, while reactions split sharply between condemnations from many governments in Africa, Asia and Latin America and support from most European and North American NATO members.
