Russian spy ship currently on edge of UK waters, warns defence secretary
The Yantar, a vessel built for intelligence and undersea cable mapping, has twice entered UK waters this year and targeted RAF pilots with lasers, Defence Secretary John Healey said.
- This year, Defence Secretary John Healey said the Russian spy ship Yantar is on the edge of UK waters north of Scotland after entering the UK's wider waters over the last few weeks, monitored by a Royal Navy frigate and RAF planes as it directed lasers at pilots.
- Detailing the vessel's role, Healey said the Yantar is designed for gathering intelligence and mapping undersea cables and is part of a Russian fleet and programme run by the Main Directorate of Deep‑Sea Research .
- Healey added this was the second deployment this year for the Yantar, recalling his January warning that `That Russian action is deeply dangerous`.
- He warned Russia directly that the UK sees their actions and is ready if the Yantar travels south this week, framing tracking with allies as a demonstration of Britain's capability and `readiness to act`.
- Contextualising the warning, Healey linked recent global incidents with Chinese spies and 90,000 cyber attacks on the UK defence system, saying Britain must step up with hard power, allies and diplomacy.
