- Alekseev, a senior GRU officer, is first deputy head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff and led Syria intelligence operations and talks with Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin in 2023.
- According to SHOT and Baza, the attacker waited on Volokolamskoye Highway near a residential building and shot Alekseev in the back several times, while Russia's Investigative Committee said `an unidentified individual fired several shots` before fleeing.
- A criminal case under attempted murder and illegal firearms charges was initiated, with Russia's Investigative Committee saying `Investigative actions and operational search measures are being carried out to identify the person or persons involved`, while Ukraine remains not officially linked and yet to comment.
- Since Moscow's full-scale offensive in 2022, multiple senior Russian officers have been targeted, including Fanil Sarvarov and Igor Kirillov, with Kyiv claiming responsibility for some hits.
