Russian general accused of masterminding the attack against Kyiv’s children’s hospital injured in assassination attempt
The officer was hospitalized in critical condition after a gunman on a motorcycle opened fire, and doctors removed the bullets before a transfer to Moscow.
On Thursday, Russian Major General Nikolai Varpakhovich, commander of the 22nd Heavy Bomber Aviation Division, was shot near Engels in the Saratov region. A gunman on a motorcycle fired bullets into his torso and face, leaving him seriously wounded.
Varpakhovich's division is linked to Russia's long-range missile strikes against Ukraine, including a July 8, 2024, attack on the Okhmatdyt Children facility in Kyiv. The European Union previously sanctioned him for his role in these operations.
According to media outlet Mash, the assailant approached a private house in Probuzhdenie on a motorcycle wearing a helmet. One bullet struck Varpakhovich's torso; another hit his face, while his driver was also injured but managed to call an ambulance.
Doctors removed the bullets from Varpakhovich, who remains in serious condition following the assassination attempt. Preparations are underway to transfer him to Moscow aboard a specialized medical aircraft for further treatment.
Engels hosts a strategic base for Russia's long-range aviation, housing Tu-95MS and Tu-160 bombers used to launch cruise missiles against Ukraine. Production of these aircraft ended more than three decades ago, making losses or damage permanently reduce Russia's irreplaceable fleet.
