Russia bombards Ukraine with drones and missiles a day before planned peace talks
Russia launched about 450 drones and 70 missiles in a major strike on Ukraine's energy grid, cutting heating to over 1,100 buildings before peace talks, officials said.
- On Tuesday, Russia launched a major overnight assault on Ukraine, using around 450 long-range drones and 70 missiles, a day before U.S.-brokered talks.
- Ukraine said the strikes specifically targeted the power grid to deny civilians light, heating and water, while Kyiv alleges Russia used the Kremlin-agreed pause until Feb. 1 to stockpile weapons.
- By early morning, about 1,170 apartment buildings in Kyiv had lost heating, and five people were wounded as strikes damaged homes, a kindergarten, a gas station, and cultural sites, Ukrainian Culture Minister Tetiana Berezhna said.
- Zelenskyy said the strikes will affect Kyiv negotiating team and called them a "really bad signal," adding Ukraine is ready to end fighting but `No one is going to surrender`.
- NATO pledged support, with allies providing 75% of missiles to the front and 90% of those for Ukraine's air defense, Rutte said, affirming long-term backing.
