Rory McIlroy Open and Honest on Struggles After PGA Final Round Disappointment
McIlroy said missed birdie chances cost him the title and added that he will arrive early to prepare for Shinnecock Hills.
Rory McIlroy finished five strokes behind winner Aaron Rai at the PGA Championship on Sunday, carding a one-under-par 69 at Aronimink Golf Club in Philadelphia. The 37-year-old failed to mount the necessary final-round charge.
Missing several birdie chances, McIlroy rued his inability to capitalize on two par-fives. "I'll rue three holes today that I didn't take advantage of," he said, identifying the difference between contention and a realistic title chance.
Chasing consecutive major titles, McIlroy admitted a calendar Grand Slam briefly crossed his mind, though he called the prospect "bordering on unrealistic." He sought his seventh major title to surpass Sir Nick Faldo's tally as Europe's most successful golfer.
On Monday, McIlroy shifted his attention to next month's US Open at Shinnecock Hills in New York. He noted the course will present a "very different test" compared to Aronimink.
Greens at Shinnecock Hills feature significant run-offs and slopes, requiring a sharp short game during the US Open. The course lacks thick rough around the greens, a setup McIlroy feels suits his preferred style of play better than Aronimink.
