Romanian grooming gang jailed for raping and sexually exploiting women
- Returning to the dock on Monday, ringleader Mircea Marian Cumpanasoiu received a 24-year sentence for raping and exploiting 10 vulnerable women in Dundee, with co-defendants Stan, Dobre, Urlateanu, and Bugonea also jailed.
- Police Scotland found the gang plied victims aged between 16 and 30 with drugs including crack cocaine and whisky at properties in Dundee between June 2021 and September 2022.
- Trial testimony and videos corroborated charges, with Cumpanasoiu convicted of rape, trafficking, and brothel-keeping; mobile footage shows him singing to 50 Cent and a victim climbing a tree.
- Judge Lord Scott warned about victims' vulnerability and said deportation will likely be a matter for the Home Office on sentence completion, with DI Carswell emphasizing ongoing victim support: `What I would say to them is even at this time if they don't want to engage with the police, the support's always there if they need help with anything on the back of this`.
- Three defendants were extradited from Belgium and the Czech Republic after fleeing, with some gang members working as food delivery drivers while grooming Romanian women trafficked to Dundee, the High Court in Glasgow heard.
