Rohit Sharma To Replace Hardik Pandya As MI Captain? Report Provides Big Update Before IPL 2027
Franchise sources denied any formal talks, even as reports say a Rohit Sharma return could reshape Hardik Pandya trade plans and leadership beyond 2027.
On Tuesday, India Today reported that Mumbai Indians management is leaning toward restoring Rohit Sharma as captain for the IPL 2027 season, handing the role back to the franchise's most successful skipper.
Hardik Pandya took over the captaincy before IPL 2024 after rejoining from Gujarat Titans, but Mumbai Indians have struggled to replicate the success Rohit achieved, leading five titles between 2013 and 2020.
Contrary to these reports, Mumbai Indians sources cited by NDTV dismissed the speculation, stating the franchise has not held internal discussions regarding the IPL 2027 captaincy decision.
Reports link Hardik to a potential trade with Kolkata Knight Riders or Rajasthan Royals, leaving his future with the franchise uncertain and affecting Mumbai's leadership planning.
If Hardik departs, Mumbai may consider Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, or New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner as potential leaders; Rohit will turn 40 during the 2027 season.
