After twenty-five years of rule, the right is likely to be ousted by RN vice-president Julien Sanchez, or by communist Vincent Boumet, in the second round of municipal elections. In war for a year, the two candidates from the LR majority finally announced the merger of their lists on Monday 16 March.
The first round of municipal elections took place on Sunday, March 15. The results fell: Julian Sanchez's RN list came first in Nîmes, just ahead of the united left-wing list led by Communist Vincent Bouchet. Who will succeed Jean-Paul Fournier, mayor LR at the head of Nîmes for twenty-five years? In the first estimates, the union of the lefts (excluding LFI) and the National Rally are at elbow to elbow with 30.5% of the votes.
In Nîmes, the third city of Occitanie with a little more than 150,000 inhabitants, five lists clash in the first round of municipal elections, to succeed Jean-Paul Fournier, mayor LR since 2001.
