Studies show that only about 3 percent of accused priests have served their prison sentences. This is mostly because the crimes were not reported until years later, after the statute of limitations had expired or the accused had died. Academics and the Vatican estimate that between 2 and 5 percent of Catholic priests have been accused of child sexual abuse since the middle of the last century.
