Rescue efforts underway at B.C. mine where three workers are trapped underground

BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 24 – Three miners remain trapped after two collapses blocked access and cut communication; rescue teams are using specialized technology to restore contact and ensure safety, officials said.

  • Three workers became trapped underground at the Red Chris copper and gold mine in northern British Columbia after two rockfalls on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
  • The workers were positioned over 500 meters away from the initial affected area and had moved into a MineARC refuge chamber prior to a second collapse that blocked their escape route.
  • Newmont Corp and Imperial Metals, the mine owners, immediately activated emergency protocols, paused production, and initiated rescue efforts including debris removal and deploying specialized drones to assess underground safety.
  • The refuge chamber can accommodate up to 16 individuals, offering a secure and well-ventilated space with enough air, food, and liquids to sustain them for several days while rescue teams work to reestablish communication and safely remove the trapped workers.
  • The provincial government dispatched geotechnical inspectors and expedited equipment transfer from nearby mines to aid rescue, highlighting ongoing coordination and industry support to bring the workers home safely.

No new info on trapped Northwest B.C. drillers offered at evening press conference

Perhaps the one thing that came out of a press conference on three Hytech Drilling employees trapped in the Red Chris Mine in Northwest B.C. is that Newmont, the mine operator, is at least trying to keep the press in the loop about what is going on.
