Jammu & Kashmir Police received the highest gallantry medals at 33, with 982 total awards recognizing acts of bravery and distinguished service across India, government said.
- The Ministry of Home Affairs on Sunday published Republic Day 2026 honours awarding 982 medals, including 125 Gallantry, 101 President's Distinguished Service, and 756 Meritorious Service Medals to Police, Fire, HG&CD, and Correctional Services.
- The Ministry of Home Affairs defined the awards as recognising rare gallantry acts with the Medal for Gallantry, while PSM honours distinguished service and MSM rewards devoted duty.
- The largest share of bravery medals—45—was awarded to personnel in the Jammu and Kashmir operations theatre, with Jammu & Kashmir Police receiving 33 Gallantry Medals and the Central Reserve Police Force 12.
- The medals will be presented during Republic Day ceremonies to honour exceptional contributions, with the Ministry of Home Affairs naming IPS officer Tanushree among individual awardees.
- The home ministry said the Centre has in recent years taken steps to transform the award ecosystem, with Uttar Pradesh leading with 18 Gallantry Medals, four PSM and 68 MSM, while Maharashtra received 31 Gallantry Medals, four PSM and 40 MSM.
