Report: Pentagon Considers Relocating Gulf Bases

Repeated Iranian strikes left the Fifth Fleet headquarters partly unusable and prompted officials to consider moving some functions farther west.

  • New satellite images published by The Wall Street Journal on Friday show extensive damage to the Navy Fifth Fleet base in Bahrain, including command centers and at least 12 other buildings.
  • Damage to the Bahrain base and about 20 other sites has prompted Washington to reconsider its Middle East footprint, including potentially reducing presence in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
  • Strikes damaged critical infrastructure including housing for 450 personnel, with repair estimates reaching about $200 million for the Bahrain facility and about $386 million across all damaged sites.
  • Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with the Gulf Cooperation Council on Thursday as CENTCOM spokesperson Tim Hawkins stated the strategy of protecting people worked despite damage.
  • Retired Vice Adm. John Fozzie Miller noted the base was not built for modern threats, while Mackenzie Eaglen warned the strikes 'exposed weakness and vulnerabilities across the board' for U.S. forces.
