Reform UK Amendment Would Restrict Election Materials to English or Welsh
The proposal would criminalize campaign material in Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Cornish, with penalties of up to six months in prison, critics said.
Reform UK's deputy leader Richard Tice tabled an amendment to the Representation of the People Bill requiring all election materials be in English or Welsh only, punishable by up to six months imprisonment.
This proposal targets indigenous UK languages including Irish, Scottish Gaelic, and Cornish, which critics argue undermines democratic participation and discriminates against minority communities with legal protections.
Language expert Sophia Smith Galer branded the amendment "plainly discriminatory," while the Cornish nationalist party Mebyon Kernow warned it could even outlaw their own party name on election materials.
SNP MSP Maree Todd called the amendment "despicable" and "anti-Scottish" as reports emerged Monday that the broader Bill faces delays until September, giving officials time to review amendments.
Legal experts question whether the amendment could withstand challenges under the Equality Act 2010 and the Good Friday Agreement, though political observers consider its passage unlikely.
