I Cannot Abdicate My Constitutional Duty by Participating in Biased Exercise; LoP Is Not Rubber Stamp: Rahul Gandhi on CBI Chief's Selection.
Gandhi said the government denied key candidate reports and turned the selection into a mere formality.
- On Tuesday, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi registered formal dissent during the high-powered Selection Committee meeting at Lok Kalyan Marg regarding the process to appoint the next CBI Director.
- Gandhi recalled his previous dissent recorded on 5th May 2025 and a letter sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 21st October 2025 suggesting fair selection measures, to which he received no response.
- The Committee expected him to review 69 candidate appraisal records during the meeting while denying access to 360-degree reports, done "without any legal basis" to ensure only a "pre-decided candidate" was chosen.
- "The leader of opposition is not a rubber stamp," Gandhi said, arguing he cannot participate in a "biased exercise" because the government has repeatedly misused the CBI to target political opponents and critics.
- With the tenure of incumbent CBI Director Praveen Sood ending soon, the government is expected to announce the appointment amid the agency's handling of several high-profile investigations across India.
