Racism has no place in Singapore; concerns about SIA-Air India deal ‘purely commercial’, says WP MP Kenneth Tiong
Police are reviewing online comments that used racist stereotypes and slurs as officials urge platforms to remove posts breaching guidelines.
- On Saturday, Sept 5, Senior Minister Shanmugam announced that police are investigating racist and xenophobic online comments regarding the Nepal floods and Singapore Airlines' investment in Air India.
- Reports that Air India sought $1.5 billion in investment triggered 'anti-Indian, racist ranting' online, while comments regarding the Nepal floods—which killed more than 1,200 people—drew criticism for claiming missing Singaporeans 'are not our own'.
- Shanmugam deemed the attacks 'shameful, nasty and totally unacceptable,' with references to snakes, curry, and the slur 'Ceca faces.' The Ministry of Home Affairs identified 20 examples of such stereotypes in online posts.
- The Ministry of Digital Development and Information will mandate that platforms remove posts breaching guidelines, as Shanmugam asserted individuals making such comments should be 'unmasked and dealt with' to prevent normalization.
- Regarding SIA's investment in Air India, Shanmugam cautioned that politicizing commercial decisions could compromise discipline, emphasizing that SIA must assess investments based on 'long-term growth and profitability' rather than political considerations.
