Queens Synagogues and Homes Vandalized With Swastikas; Police Search for 4 Suspects
Police are searching for at least four suspects after swastikas and Nazi slogans were spray-painted on five Jewish sites, officials said.
On Monday, May 4, 2026, four teenagers spray-painted swastikas and "Hitler" on the Rego Park Jewish Center and four other Forest Hills locations, prompting an NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force investigation.
This incident follows new New York City Police Department data showing Jews were targeted in 60 percent of all confirmed hate crimes last month, despite comprising only 10 percent of the city's population.
Vandals defaced a Holocaust Memorial plaque at Congregation Machane Chodosh and targeted a garage door belonging to a Holocaust survivor, acts local leaders condemned as "deliberate act of antisemitic hatred."
City Council Speaker Julie Menin, with Council Members Lynn Schulman and Phil Wong, condemned the attack while confirming the NYPD is searching for the four suspects captured on surveillance video.
Rabbi Romiel Daniel noted that the Rego Park Jewish Center, which houses children and seniors, is now concerned about safety, while Rabbi Yosef Mendelson urged the community to respond with positive actions.
Unknown people smear Jewish institutions in New York with swastikas and "Hitler" letters. The police are looking for four perpetrators. Mayor Mamdani speaks of "anti-Semitic hatred".
