'Sartorial Diplomacy' on Show in Expo of Late UK Queen's Fashion
The show includes about 300 garments and items, including the stunt double dress from the London 2012 opening ceremony, curators said.
- On Friday, the 'Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style' exhibition opens at the King's Gallery in Buckingham Palace, featuring around 300 garments spanning 10 decades of the late monarch's wardrobe.
- Designer Hardy Amies noted the Queen adapted her style to suit each period, yet emphasized that "at the end of the day, it's down to practicality" for carrying out her duties.
- Two identical versions of the peach cocktail dress worn by the Queen's stunt double at the London 2012 Olympic Games are on display, designed by Angela Kelly with Victorian-style bloomers and a rear zip for the parachute.
- The exhibition has already sold out its first few weeks with thousands of tickets snapped up, while items from the late monarch's private apartments remain under the care of the Royal Collection.
- Colour served as an important element of the monarchy's soft power, exemplified by a green and white Norman Hartnell gown worn during a 1961 state visit to Pakistan to ensure the Queen remained visible to guests.
