BELARUS, AUG 1 – The Oreshnik missile travels at Mach 10, carries up to six nuclear warheads, and will be deployed to Belarus to enhance Russia's strategic reach over Europe, officials said.
- President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia's newest hypersonic missile, the Oreshnik, has entered military service and will be deployed in Belarus later this year.
- Last autumn, Russia updated its nuclear doctrine to permit a more flexible response, including the potential use of nuclear arms in situations involving conventional attacks that threaten its sovereignty or that of its allies. This revision also extended Moscow's nuclear protection to Belarus through a security treaty signed amid ongoing tensions with the West over Ukraine.
- Russia has positioned tactical nuclear arms in Belarus and chosen sites to station the Oreshnik intermediate-range missile, capable of launching either nuclear or conventional warheads and possessing a range that spans the entirety of Europe.
- Putin commended the Oreshnik missile’s multiple warheads, which travel toward targets at speeds reaching Mach 10 and cannot be intercepted, stating that the combined impact of several warheads in a single conventional attack might cause damage comparable to a nuclear strike.
