Another Oklahoman hit by SNAP benefits crime ring
- U.S. Rep. John Brecheen, R-Okla., and Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, reintroduced the SNAP Reform and Upward Mobility Act, which proposes changes to work requirements for recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program .
- The reintroduced bill seeks to address what Brecheen calls a 'culture of dependency' fostered by the current SNAP system, which he believes has been mismanaged by the federal government for decades through loosened eligibility requirements and insufficient fraud prevention.
- The proposed legislation would raise the SNAP work requirement age from 54 to 64 and require able-bodied primary caretakers with children over six years old to work, with married couples able to fulfill the requirement jointly, and also includes provisions to amend poverty level determinations, increase state matching funds, and crack down on fraud, including permanent disqualification for recipients committing fraud.
- In September 2024, over 42 million individuals received SNAP benefits, totaling $93.6 million in taxpayer dollars, with an average benefit of $189.55 per person, according to data from the United States Department of Agriculture, which administers the program.
- If enacted, the legislation could impose work requirements on older individuals and primary caretakers who currently receive SNAP benefits without such obligations, potentially altering the landscape of the program.
