Coco Gauff’s French Open Title Defense Ends in the Third Round After Loss to Anastasia Potapova.
Potapova, born in Russia and now representing Austria, improved to 3-2 against Gauff after the fourth-ranked American won nine games in two rounds.
Defending champion Coco Gauff lost to Anastasia Potapova 4-6, 7-6 , 6-4 on Saturday, ending her French Open title defense in the third round at Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Potapova, who represents Austria, improved her career record against Gauff to 3-2 after reaching the Madrid Open semifinals and Linz final during a strong clay season.
The match took place before sparse crowds inside Court Philippe-Chatrier as French fans stayed away to watch the Champions League soccer final.
Gauff had reached the Italian Open final and defeated Taylor Townsend and Mayar Sherif in straight sets before this loss to Potapova.
Potapova's victory marks a career-best Grand Slam result, surpassing her previous fourth-round appearance at the French Open in 2024.
The dropout of favored tennis players continues at Roland Garros. After Italian Jannik Sinner and Serbian Novak Djokovic, last year's defending champion Coco Gauff also crashed out. The American was bettered by Russian Anastasia Potapova with an Austrian passport, who won 4:6, 7:6 (1) and 6:4 after two hours and 39 minutes.
