'Pressure' on Fianna Fáil TDs to back Gavin - O'Connor
Jim Gavin withdrew after controversy over owing €3,000 to a former tenant, leaving Fianna Fáil without a campaigning candidate and facing criticism over vetting and campaign costs.
- Micheál Martin, Taoiseach and Fianna Fáil leader, and Jack Chambers, Fianna Fáil deputy leader, pressed Fianna Fáil TDs and Senators with repeated calls before the 9th September selection convention.
- After a weekend of questioning, Gavin withdrew late on Sunday night after claims he owed a former tenant more than 3,000 surfaced, while Fianna Fáil said it conducted "comprehensive due diligence" and was unaware of the issue.
- Niall Donald, the tenant who has spoken publicly, said payments continued between May and November 2009 totaling 3,300 euros.
- Despite his withdrawal, Jim Gavin's name remains on the ballot and any votes will be counted and redistributed under the transferable vote process, leaving Fianna Fáil without an active campaigner.
- James O'Connor TD demanded the party "resolutely address our mistakes" after six weeks of decisions, blaming Micheál Martin and Jack Chambers for elevating Gavin who should never have been on the ballot.
