There are still doubts as to how Portugal will meet 2% of GDP's defence expenditure this year, as Luís Montenegro promised.
Prime Minister Luis Montenegro revealed this Thursday that the Portuguese Executive intends to reach a 3.5% of GDP investment in Defence "in the next 10 years," a prospect that he hoped would be able to "get consensus" at NATO's summit in Haia. "Portugual is prepared to be part of a summit that marks a new phase, which guarantees NATO unity, which guarantees solidarity between Europe, the United States and Canada," he said.
The prime minister reiterated that Portugal would reach 2% of GDP for this year's defence and considered it to be "an investment in the economy".
