Pope Leo XIV will pray at the site of the 2020 Beirut port blast in his first foreign trip

  • The Vatican confirmed on Oct. 27, 2025, that Pope Leo XIV will travel Nov. 27 to 30 in Turkey and Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 in Lebanon for his first trip outside Italy.
  • To mark the Council of Nicaea's 1,700th anniversary, Pope Leo XIV continues Pope Francis' planned visits, emphasizing interfaith relations and the plight of Christians, the Vatican said.
  • On Nov. 28, he will travel by helicopter to the archaeological site and pray near the Basilica of Saint Neophytos, then lead an outdoor Mass and pray at the Beirut port blast site that killed over 200 people.
  • The Vatican said he will make appeals for peace across the region, with joint events involving Patriarch Bartholomew I and outreach to 260 million Orthodox Christians under the Lebanon trip motto `Blessed are the peacemakers`.
  • He will not visit Lebanon's south, battered by last year's war between Israel and Hezbollah, there are no plans to visit the Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, and investigations into the Aug. 4, 2020 Beirut port blast have stalled with no convictions.
