Police investigating grooming gangs given AI tools to speed up cold case work
ENGLAND AND WALES, AUG 5 – All 43 police forces in England and Wales will use AI tools to investigate grooming gangs and review over 1,200 cold child sexual exploitation cases, supported by a £426,000 funding boost.
- Police forces in the UK have been given artificial intelligence tools to help speed up investigations of cold cases involving grooming gangs, modern slavery, county lines, and child sex abuse.
- The AI tools have already saved officers in 13 forces more than £20m and 16,000 hours of investigation time, and can translate large amounts of text in foreign languages and analyze digital data to find patterns and relationships between suspects.
- The increased access to AI technology follows Baroness Casey's recommendation for a national operation to review more than 1,200 closed cases of child sexual exploitation, as her report found a lack of data on offenders' ethnicity to be 'a major failing over the last decade or more.
