Cabinet Agrees 11th-Hour Budget Deal without Opposition Support - DutchNews.nl
Finance Minister Eelco Heinen said the minority government still lacks opposition backing as it prepares to send the budget to parliament.
On Monday, the coalition of D66, CDA, and VVD reached a draft budget agreement following a marathon weekend of "tough" and "intensive" talks.
The minority government remains 10 seats short of a majority in the Lower House and 16 short in the Senate, requiring support from at least two opposition parties.
Coalition partners resolved internal differences over €6.5 billion in proposed budget cuts and reforms to the "Box 3" income tax module, Finance Minister Eelco Heinen said.
Following the breakdown of opposition talks last week, Pro leader Jesse Klaver warned that the coalition had "not made choices" and "the problems have been delayed."
Finance Minister Heinen will present the budget on September 15, though Justice Minister David van Weel acknowledged "nobody is proud of this process" as the cabinet seeks parliamentary approval.
The coalition is making "a number of substantial concessions" to the opposition, said Prime Minister Rob Jetten after the budget was approved by the cabinet. He believes this will enable him to garner support from across the right in the House of Representatives.
