Trinidad and Tobago Joins Global UPI Network, BHIM in Eight Countries Now: Full List
TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO, JUL 05 – Trinidad and Tobago adopted India's flagship digital payment platform to boost digital governance and inclusive development, joining seven other countries using Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
- During his visit to Trinidad and Tobago on July 3-4, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the country as the pioneer in the Caribbean region to implement India’s Unified Payments Interface for digital transactions.
- The adoption came after India and Trinidad and Tobago reached agreements to work together on implementing various components of India Stack, such as DigiLocker, electronic signatures, and the Government e-Marketplace platform.
- The UPI system is now used in eight countries globally, with recent launches in Mauritius and Sri Lanka in 2024 and expansion in Singapore in 2023 through partnerships like NIPL and HitPay.
- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Trinidad and Tobago for integrating the Unified Payments Interface through the BHIM app, highlighting the advancement in secure digital transactions and expressing a commitment to enhance bilateral cooperation in digital initiatives.
- The adoption reflects increasing international recognition of India's digital payment innovations and indicates a commitment to deeper cooperation in implementing digital solutions and enhancing public sector services between India and its partner nations.
