PM Carney in Ireland to meet with leaders, visit family’s homeland
The leaders will announce a new trade and investment framework as Canada seeks wider European ties and Ireland moves toward full CETA ratification.
On Saturday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Dublin for a two-day official visit, where he and Taoiseach Micheál Martin will announce a new bilateral co-operation framework on trade and investment.
Following the Dublin engagements, Carney travels to County Mayo on Sunday to visit his grandparents' birthplace in Aughagower and meet Irish President Catherine Connolly.
Bilateral trade between the countries has expanded to €12 billion, with officials aiming to finalize Ireland's full ratification of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement by 2026.
Officials are debating the future of the Aughinish Alumina refinery, which supplies Russian smelters, as some describe the facility as 'a bit embarrassing' for Ireland amid the war in Ukraine.
Ireland assumes the presidency of the Council of the European Union in July, positioning this visit as a strategic step for Canada to deepen relations with Europe on critical minerals and security.
