Plan for $20 Million Firefighter Training Center Near the Site of Ohio Derailment Is Revived
The $20 million grant funds a center expanding hazardous-material firefighter training and higher education, providing free priority access to East Palestine emergency agencies.
- On Friday, state and federal leaders announced updated plans for a first responder training center in East Palestine, funded largely by Norfolk Southern's $20 million commitment to Youngstown State University's Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences and Forensic Science.
- The project traces back to the Feb. 3, 2023 derailment that led to evacuation and was first proposed shortly afterward, with support from Ohio officials after Vice President J.D. Vance's January visit.
- The center will offer training for hazardous-material and scenario-based incidents, expand firefighter training access, integrate fire science curriculum and workforce pathways for YSU students, and provide East Palestine emergency response agencies free, priority access.
- DeWine said, `Developing this plan was truly a collaborative effort involving those from the White House to the Statehouse to the community of East Palestine`, and Norfolk Southern agreed to a long-term endowment and donated 15 acres of land.
- Incorporating higher education and workforce development will deepen the center's impact by preparing current and future emergency personnel, YSU President Bill Johnson said.
