Pittsburgh Penguins name Florida Everblades as new ECHL affiliate, ending agreement with Wheeling Nailers
The move follows Pittsburgh’s sale to Hoffmann Family of Companies, which also owns Florida, and gives the Everblades four championships since 2019.
On Thursday, Pittsburgh Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas announced the Florida Everblades as the team's new ECHL affiliate, ending a 29-year partnership with the Wheeling Nailers.
The shift follows the Penguins' June 23 sale to the Hoffmann Family Companies, which owns the Everblades; the team cited "very unique circumstances" for the separation.
Penguins assistant general manager Jason Spezza stated the organization prioritizes Florida's "championship pedigree and winning environment" to help players reach their maximum potential.
Nailers President Brian Komorowski confirmed the team has already begun discussions with other NHL clubs regarding future affiliation, while the Everblades won the 2026 Kelly Cup.
Dubas thanked the Wheeling community for nearly three decades of service, wishing the Nailers continued success as an independent franchise following the affiliation's end.
