Wildfires in Chile Kill at Least 15 People, Force More than 50,000 to Evacuate
- On January 18, 2026 Chilean President Gabriel Boric declared a state of catastrophe in the Nuble and Biobio regions as wildfires killed at least 15 people and forced more than 50,000 to evacuate.
- Strong winds and soaring temperatures fanned advancing flames, hampering firefighters as long-term drought and dry forests worsened wildfire risk in recent years.
- Chile's CONAF forestry agency reported 24 active fires nationwide, with nearly 8,500 hectares burned and more than 250 properties destroyed, including 253 homes in Concepcion municipality.
- Mr Boric wrote, `In light of the serious ongoing wildfires, I have decided to declare a state of catastrophe in the regions of uble and Biobo. All resources are available`, enabling the armed forces to assist with firefighting and evacuations.
- Recent deadly blazes include multiple fatal fires in Chile over the past two years, including at least 120 deaths two years ago in the Valparaíso region and 138 in February 2024 near Viña del Mar.
