- After attending a Bristol City match, Paul John Lumber returned home at 19:30 GMT, took his van key to fetch his work ladder, and went out to put up flags on local lampposts.
- Neighbours called 999 after hearing a loud bang and found him on the ground with his ladder and a Union Jack flag nearby; a CT scan showed extensive head injuries including a skull fracture, and he underwent two operations.
- Dr Simon Fox KC, assistant coroner for Avon, concluded the death was accidental at a short hearing on Thursday, and Andrew Eastwood, coroner's officer, said the family have no concerns about the care provided.
- His authorship and fandom drew local tributes, and a GoFundMe by Stephen Gardiner raised more than 5,700 in his memory.
