Paraguay president vows to defend Taiwan ties ‘with all its strength’
PARAGUAY, JUL 14 – Paraguay, the only South American country to recognize Taiwan, plans a high-level visit amid China tensions and highlights Taiwan's investments in healthcare and technology.
- On July 15, 2025, Paraguayan President Santiago Peña announced at an investment forum in Asunción that Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te will visit Paraguay in 30 days, with Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung and a delegation of about 30 businesspeople present.
- This statement came after Paraguay reaffirmed on July 14 its commitment to maintaining a 68-year diplomatic alliance with Taiwan, following objections from China over Taiwan’s distinct representation at a global congress for aesthetic plastic surgeons held recently in Singapore.
- At the Singapore congress held June 19–21, organizers listed Taiwan as a distinct participant, which led to the Chinese delegation lodging a protest, canceling remarks, and walking out, while Taiwanese surgeons delivered academic presentations to fill the gaps.
- President Peña expressed Paraguay’s commitment to upholding its nearly seven-decade-long partnership with Taiwan, grounded in shared democratic ideals, emphasizing the country’s determination to maintain this alliance firmly and vocally. He also acknowledged Taiwan’s generous contributions, including significant investments and donations of medical equipment such as 26 portable ultrasound machines and three CT scanners.
- The visit and ongoing cooperation, including Taiwan’s healthcare system support and semiconductor business ties, suggest Paraguay aims to enhance collaboration with Taiwan despite Beijing’s claims over the island and expected strong reactions to Lai’s planned U.S. stopover.
