Panthers Solve Goaltender Situation, Acquire Jacob Markstrom in Trade
Florida sent Evan Rodrigues and Jesper Boqvist to New Jersey in the deal, and Markstrom returns on a $6 million cap hit.
On Tuesday, the Florida Panthers acquired goaltender Jacob Markstrom and forward Angus Crookshank from the New Jersey Devils, trading forward Evan Rodrigues, forward Jesper Boqvist, and defenseman Ben Steeves.
The Panthers finalized this deal just 24 hours after acquiring goalie Akira Schmid from the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday, marking their second goaltender trade in two days amid an active NHL trade period.
Markstrom, 36, returns to the organization where he began his NHL career 15 years ago. Panthers general manager Bill Zito called him "an established veteran leader in this league who possesses size and a relentless drive to win."
This move signals the end of Sergei Bobrovsky's tenure in South Florida; the 37-year-old goalie who backstopped the team to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2024 and 2025 enters free agency on Wednesday.
New Jersey adds offensive depth with Rodrigues, who turns 33 on July 28, while the Devils now turn to free agency to secure a goaltender partner for Jake Allen.
