Ottawa Senators Sign Jordan Spence to 4-Year Contract Extension
The deal ends negotiations and keeps the 73-game defenseman under contract as Ottawa manages its blue line and avoids arbitration.
The Ottawa Senators re-signed 25-year-old defenseman Jordan Spence to a four-year, $20-million contract extension on Friday, securing him at $5 million per season.
Acquired from the Los Angeles Kings last year, Spence recorded seven goals and 31 points over 73 games in his first season with Ottawa, with his role expanding after veteran Nick Jensen underwent knee surgery.
Spence played top-four defensive minutes during the playoffs, including 39 minutes in a double-overtime loss against the Carolina Hurricanes, after earning just $1.5 million last season.
General manager Staios secured the extension to avoid arbitration, having previously gauged the trade market for Spence earlier this month before deciding to retain him.
The Senators continue seeking a larger physical presence on defense, with reported interest in Rasmus Ristolainen and Zach Whitecloud, while maintaining informal talks with Artem Zub to manage the development of top prospect Carter Yakemchuk.
