ChatGPT Wants to Act More Like an OS -- as It Transforms Into an App Platform

OpenAI’s new developer tools enable building interactive apps and autonomous AI agents inside ChatGPT, integrating services from major partners like Expedia and Canva.

  • At DevDay in San Francisco, Sam Altman announced new developer toolkits, framing ChatGPT as a full software platform beyond a chatbot.
  • OpenAI's gambit is to embed apps inside GPT to keep users and developers in its walled garden, and the company announced plans last month to build $1 trillion of computing capacity despite ongoing losses.
  • The company also released the Apps SDK with partners Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify and Zillow, plus AgentKit for building AI agents and Codex, now generally available.
  • More than 1,500 developers gathered as Apps-in-ChatGPT launched for logged-in users and the Apps SDK entered preview, with app submissions and Enterprise access planned later this year while Europe remains unsupported.
  • Industry reaction highlighted concerns about curation risks as developer community debated spam potential while OpenAI backed the launch with a 6 gigawatt AMD deal and 160 million shares warrant; Codex usage surged 10x, serving over 40 trillion tokens.
