One of the world’s most-visited museums plans an extension in an industrial Dutch city
The new 3,500-square-metre museum will highlight design and technology, supported by ASML and local sponsors, enhancing cultural access in southern Netherlands.
- On Thursday, the Rijksmuseum and Eindhoven municipality announced plans for a new branch to give southern audiences direct access to works from the national collection.
- Eindhoven, a Brainport high-tech hub, hosts a technical university and workforce that align with the branch’s focus on design, craftsmanship and the industrial focus of Eindhoven.
- The building will span more than 3,500 square metres, with detailed plans drawn up next year; it will be sited in a new park on the banks of the Dommel River near Eindhoven central railway station and is scheduled to open in six to eight years.
- ASML and local industries will underwrite operating costs, with Christophe Fouquet saying the company is `excited to support this initiative`, while the local council plans funding at 80 million pending city council approval.
- The Eindhoven branch will be the Rijksmuseum's first annex, housing revolving exhibitions and complementing the Van Abbemuseum and Evoluon to strengthen Brainport Eindhoven.
