One dead, two critical after Sydney stabbing attack
A 25-year-old man faces murder and grievous bodily harm charges after a random stabbing in Merrylands left one dead and two critically injured, police said.
- New South Wales Police said on Tuesday a man was arrested after a stabbing in Merrylands that left one dead and two critically injured, and a crime scene was established.
- Western Sydney Local Health District confirmed the alleged offender absconded on 7 February while transferring from Cumberland Hospital to Westmead Hospital emergency department, and is known to police for petty crime and mental health incidents.
- Police say the stabbing unfolded inside a mini-market on Merrylands Road, with two stabbings inside Bina's Nepalese grocery and a third on the footpath; officers described the weapon as a kitchen knife about 20 to 30 centimetres long.
- NSW Ambulance paramedics treated three people, with one declared dead and two transported in critical condition, as forensic police established a crime scene on Merrylands Road.
- A formal review into the person's care and treatment will be undertaken and include an external senior psychiatrist after Western Sydney Local Health District confirmed he escaped care days before the incident.
