One Dead After Tractor Trailer Crash on Thruway in Albany

A deadly crash involving a semi-truck and a car occurred Monday on Highway 51 close to Truax Traer Road, just south of Elkville.
The crash occurred when a black Mazda traveling south entered the northbound lane, prompting the tractor trailer driven by Samuel Baumgarte to swerve and collide with the vehicle.
The tractor trailer flipped into a ditch located on the east side of the road, and the Mazda caught fire with its driver trapped inside, who later died at the scene.
Baumgarte, 37, received medical attention for injuries that were not life-threatening from Jackson County Ambulance Service, while vehicles were detoured from Highway 51 for approximately five hours.
Law enforcement, including the Illinois State Police, sheriff’s deputies, and specialists in crash analysis, continue to investigate the accident.
