One dead after sword attack at Swedish school
Police say an 18-year-old suspect is in custody after the attack, and investigators are interviewing witnesses while treating the case as murder and attempted murder.
On Friday afternoon, an 18-year-old attacker entered Brinell school in Fagersta, Sweden, killing a 17-year-old student with a sword. Police detained the suspect shortly after the school returned from summer break.
Two boys aged 12 and 17 were seriously wounded, with one requiring emergency surgery, while a third sustained light injuries. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson visited Saturday morning to honor the dead student and three wounded victims.
Police chief Tommy Alriksson said investigators are seeking a motive, stating "We are looking into several leads... We are trying, of course, to remain as open-minded as possible." Media reports indicate the suspect had a previous assault conviction.
Officers have conducted around 80 interviews and plan to question nearly 450 school staff and students. Minnea, a Brinell student, told SVT: "It's terrible to think that someone you sat at the same table with, someone you talked to, is suddenly dead."
Sweden has suffered previous educational institution attacks; in February 2025, a 35-year-old killed 10 people at an adult education center in Orebro, and in March 2022, an 18-year-old stabbed two teachers in Malmo. Authorities added that "the police investigation is proceeding at full speed.
