On such a day as today, but in 1779, the representatives of Spain and France signed in Aranjuez one of the Family Pacts, by which Spain pledged to support France in the invasion of Great Britain, in exchange for helping it to recover some of the territories it had lost in the past such as Gibraltar, Florida and Menorca.
