Apple Likely to Be Banned From Selling iPhones Made with Chinese Displays
UNITED STATES, JUL 15 – The ruling recommends blocking imports and sales of BOE OLED displays in the U.S. after finding misuse of Samsung's trade secrets, affecting multiple iPhone models, ITC said.
- In 2025, a preliminary decision by the federal agency overseeing trade disputes found that BOE illegally used Samsung Display's OLED technology, leading to a recommended prohibition on the importation of BOE's displays and related products into the United States.
- Samsung filed the original complaint in October 2023, accusing BOE of unlawfully using proprietary OLED manufacturing technology, and expanded legal proceedings in April 2025 with a civil suit in Texas.
- The import ban targets certain iPhone models containing BOE OLED displays, including some iPhone 15, 16, and possibly 17 units sold in the U.S., while Pro models with LTPO displays remain unaffected.
- The decision calls for a limited exclusion order to prevent the importation of infringing products, along with a cease-and-desist order to halt the sale of current inventory, and requires a 100% bond to be posted during the presidential review phase.
- If the ruling is not vetoed by the U.S. president by November 2025, Apple will need to exclude BOE from its U.S. supply chain and rely more on Samsung and LG for iPhone displays, possibly disrupting production and sales.
