Super-warming methane gas is being tackled too slowly, UN says ahead of COP30
COPENHAGEN - Almost 90% of satellite-detected methane leaks flagged to governments and oil and gas companies are not being acknowledged, the UN said Wednesday ahead of the COP30 climate talks next month. Read more at straitstimes.com.
Satellites chartered by the United Nations to track methane leaks have sent 3,500 incident alerts to States and companies over the past two years, but almost all of them have remained unanswered or acted upon, notes the UN-Environment (UNEP) "One Eye on Methane" report, released this Wednesday, 22 October. However, the trend, rising over a year, is encouraging.
Satellite images show that thousands of methane discharges occur every year in the oil and gas industry. However, according to the UN, companies often do not react. In doing so, methane contributes greatly to global warming. By Jan Kerckhoff.
