Taxpayers Face $500 Million Bill to Clean up Chevron’s WA Oil Field

WESTERN AUSTRALIA, AUSTRALIA, JUL 23 – Taxpayers will refund Chevron and partners $500 million to cover 40% of initial decommissioning costs at Barrow Island under a 1985 agreement, reducing Australia's royalty income.

Even as new environmental impacts from offshore oil and gas facilities are emerging, also emerging is the full extent of clean-up costs – and who is liable.
