Ofwat ‘to be abolished and replaced with new water regulator’
ENGLAND AND WALES, UK, JUL 18 – The UK Government plans to replace Ofwat with a new regulator after a review cited rising pollution, financial instability, and public distrust, with pollution incidents up 60% last year.
- A review by Sir Jon Cunliffe concluded Ofwat is unfit, leading to plans to scrap it next week, as it has been deemed not fit for purpose.
- Ofwat is blamed for 450,398 raw waste spills last year, having allowed huge dividends and large debt piles while underinvesting.
- Environment Secretary Steve Reed said abolishing Ofwat is 'on the table', while Labour MP Clive Lewis warned it 'would not clean up rivers or lower bills'.
- Sources said the regulator could be scrapped in name only, with ministers considering merging Ofwat’s economic duties with the Environment Agency’s functions.
- Called the climate change framework, the paper sets specific questions for stakeholders, with a closing date of Tuesday 26 August, as Ofwat aims to guide water companies' responses.
